Data cabling is simply another term for network cabling. Network cables are the pipelines through which data is transported from your computer or other device to your router. The type of network – or data – cabling required may vary depending on the system architecture.

Like any other technology, data cabling has advanced and improved over the course of time. Cat5 cabling, split into Cat5 and Cat5E cable types, is a little older, and the newer version, Cat5E, is up to 10 times faster. It also can traverse greater distances with less interference from crosstalk.
Cat6 cabling is also divided into two types: Cat6 and Cat6A. Cat6 cables have considerably thicker plastic, protecting them from crosstalk. While Cat6 cables can handle up to 10GB of data, they suffer from a bandwidth limited to 164 feet. Cat6A cables have the same benefits as Cat6, but for a full 328 feet. Cat6A cabling is therefore the most effective and state-of-the-art type of network cabling, though Cat6 and Cat5E are fine for most uses.
